Prof. Andrew Adesola Obafemi-(FNCA, FCAI, FECDMI, FIPMD, MANG, MNES, MISPN, REM USA)

Andrew Adesola Obafemi is a Professor of Geography & Environmental Management at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He holds a B.Sc (Hons) in Geography, M.Sc & Ph.D in Geography & Environmental Management and another M.Sc degree specializing in Cartography. His core research interests centres on Geoinformation/Geospatial Techniques Applications – (Cartography, GIS & Remote Sensing), Urban Studies & Planning, as well as Environmental Management and Pollution Monitoring.

He has also developed competences in Disaster Risk Management, Vulnerability Capacity Assessment, Urban Management Information Systems, and Environmental Impact Assessment, as well as land Use Analysis. He joined the services of the University of Port Harcourt in 1992 as an Assistant lecturer and rose through the ranks to become a Professor in 2013. He has served creditably and still serving in several positions of responsibility and committees within the university. He was the Assistant Director, Institute of Natural Resources and Sustainable Development (INRES) until recently when he was appointed Director, Centre for Disaster Risks Management and Development Studies.

Professor Obafemi loves his academic job like a calling, and has successfully supervised and graduated well over a hundred undergraduates, over 50 Master of Science and 8 PhD graduates. As a product of his years of teaching and research experience, he has published extensively in his chosen field of Geography and Geo-information Techniques in both national and internationally referred journals, books and conference proceedings. He was guest Editor, The Nigerian Journal of Cartography & GIS, Vol.10, 11 & 12 of 2015 -2017. Map and Associate editor, Journal of Geographic of Thought, and currently serves as a reviewer and member of the editorial board of several national and international journals. He joined the Nigerian Cartographic Association (NCA) as a student member while on a Postgraduate programme at the University of Lagos in 1990 and later continued as a full member and served in various capacities at both Chapter and national levels until he was elected the National President in the 2016 AGM and re-elected in 2018.

Besides NCA, Prof. Obafemi belongs to several other national and international professional associations such as Association of Nigerian Geographers (ANG), Nigeria Environmental Society (NES), Geoinformation Society of Nigeria (GEOSON), National Registry of Environmental Professional (NREP, USA), Institute of Corporate Administrator (CIA) and Institute of Planning, Nigeria (IPN). He is a Registered Environmental Manager (REM-USA), a certified member of the Nigerian Institute of Safety Professional (ISPON), an IPN Certified Planner, a Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Administrator (FCIA), Fellow, Institute of Policy Management Development (FIPMD), Fellow, Environmental Crisis and Disaster Management Institute (FECRMI) and Fellow, Nigerian Cartographic Association (FNCA).

Aside his academic and public service commitments, Prof. Obafemi are an experienced Environmental Consultant to several national and international corporations in Nigeria. He has either led or been a member of several Environmental Impact Assessment teams where he contributes his expertise in the area of Surveying and Geo-positioning, Geospatial Mapping and Social Impact Assessment analysis. He is a Professorial assessor and external examiner of Undergraduate and Graduate degree programmes of several Universities in Nigeria and South Africa. A devout Christian, who finds fulfillment in working and living in accordance with God’s counsel and will.

He is a lay preacher, a family life counsellor, a gospel music minister and a life member of an International Christian non-denominational body – the Full Gospel Business Men’s Fellowship (FGBMFI). He is happily married to Dr (Mrs.) Deborah Temidayo Obafemi and they are blessed with four children. Prof. Obafemi has fairly travelled in and out of Nigeria, and enjoys field research and mapping as cartographic expression of geospatial data and geographical realities. He loves to play Badminton in his leisure time, and making positive and timely impacts on the lives of his/her mentee and admirers.
